“Leuchte auf” continues to support Dortmund hospitals with BVB sleeping bags

The topic of “health” plays an important role in the social commitment of the BVB Foundation and has its own promotional pillar in the foundation concept. The current support of “light up” benefits the smallest in our society, the newborn children in Dortmund clinic and Westphalia hospital.

More than 2,000 families every year in both hospitals combined are overjoyed about the birth of a new family member. As in previous years, the children at Dortmund and Westphalia hospitals are currently starting their life with a black and yellow gift: a baby sleeping bag in BVB design.

The free gift from the hospitals to the parents is for an important cause. Providing sleeping bags is intended to counteract one of the most frequent causes of death in newborns: cot death. According to the Robert Koch Institute, this is the most common cause of death in the first year, especially between two and four months. When babies are mistakenly placed under a blanket in bed, the risk of cot death increases considerably, as blankets can, among other things, interfere with the child’s breathing.

The use of sleeping bags prevents this risk. Also, parents should consider the following tips to ensure their child sleeps as safely as possible:

  • Sleep in a sleeping bag, without any extra blanket and indoors without a baby hat
  • Always lay your baby on their back to sleep
  • Sleep in a smoke-free environment
  • Do not make the bedroom temperature too warm
  • Sleep in their own (extra) bed, not in the parents’ bed
    • on a firm, air-permeable mattress
    • without pillows / cushions
    • without cuddly toys
    • no hot water bottles
    • no coat

“The prevention of childbirth associated with SIDS is still very important to us. We are therefore very pleased that we are able once again to support two of Dortmund’s hospitals with a considerable sleeping bag donation, “says Thomas Klein from the BVB Foundation.

With a follow-up donation of baby sleeping bags “leuchte auf” continues to be committed to the prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Both hospitals now receive a total of 2,500 sleeping bags, with which the BVB Foundation would especially like to help socially disadvantaged families, who face financial problems due to the purchase of new baby articles.
