BVB women win the cup!

This time, the BVB women beat the TVB first team 3-0 (1-0) to claim the Kreispokal.

The primary objective had already been achieved on Wednesday when the BVB ladies secured promotion to the Bezirksliga with victory over TV Brechten’s second team – now the women of Borussia Dortmund have rounded off their season in style with a cup victory. This time, the newly promoted side beat the TVB first team 3-0 (1-0) to claim the Kreispokal.

It was already clear in advance that the BVB ladies would be facing a far tougher test against their opposition in the cup, who have just been promoted from the Landesliga. And that class was evident as Brechten started the game by applying plenty of pressure and playing in an aggressive manner. Yet it was BVB who had the first chance of the game: Hannah Goosmann, however, missed the target from a promising position. You could cut the tension with a knife as both teams felt the pressure in the first few minutes.

Ann-Katrin Lau had the second good chance after just under ten minutes, but her lob ended up just over the bar. Now BVB were beginning to pick up steam: Vanessa Heim rose highest among a crowd, but her header fell into the hands of Brechten’s keeper Devra Civelek. At the other end, Sandra Schröer was on the spot to deny TVB attacker Clarissa Menga.

It was an exciting game and there was little between the sides. Borussia repeatedly attempted to hit their opponents on the counter, while Brechten tried to create opportunities through patient build-up play. And yet after half an hour, the hosts were in front, much to the delight of almost 1000 spectators at the BVB training ground in Brackel. The Black and Yellows did have some luck shortly thereafter, when Menga was again left in space, but dallied on the ball for too long.

Huge cheers erupted around the ground three minutes before the half-time whistle, when Vanessa Heim picked up her head and expertly placed the ball past Civelek into the net – a dream goal to give BVB a 1-0 lead as the two sides headed into the dressing rooms. The lead was well deserved for BVB, who had been the slightly better side.

The second half was similar, much to the enjoyment of the loud Dortmund fans in attendance: the Black and Yellows were the better side and on top in the game. Virginia Glänzer finally sent the fans into raptures just before the hour mark. The centre-back headed home to double BVB’s lead, and half an hour before the final whistle, it looked clear that Dortmund were on course for an historic double. BVB goalkeeper Sandra Schröer saved brilliantly from Brechten’s striker Ramona Stachel to ensure her side maintained their two-goal lead.

Brechten were clearly trying hard to get out of their own half, but only found limited success. Although TVB were indeed on top in the closing stages, they rarely looked dangerous. The BVB defence were working well together, covering every blade of grass to keep their clean sheet. Annika Billig put the game beyond TVB when she raced on to a through ball and applied an excellent one-touch finish to make it 3-0 and blow the roof off the stadium! BVB were not to be denied the double and secured the second title in the still young history of Dortmund women’s football!
