Since 2022, Borussia Dortmund, together with eight other clubs from the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2, have been committed to using fairtrade organic cotton in the production of fan merchandise. Now the initiative “From the Field to the Fan Shop” has been nominated for the German Sustainability Award for Sport – Germany’s most prestigious award for ecological and social engagement.

For the first time in a top European league, various football clubs have joined forces to support fair and sustainable cotton production in the Indian state of Gujarat. In addition to BVB, 1. FC Union Berlin, Arminia Bielefeld, Eintracht Frankfurt, Hamburger SV, SV Werder Bremen, VfB Stuttgart, VfL Wolfsburg and FC St. Pauli are also part of the alliance.

Together with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the textile company Brands Fashion, small farmers are supported in switching to the cultivation of organic cotton. The clubs commit to buying the cotton for the production of their fan merchandise. And already, T-shirts, baby onesies and many more items made from sustainable cotton are available in the fan shops of some clubs.

Together with local partners, children and young people from cotton-growing communities are also supported through sports training that prepares them for the labour market and raises awareness of gender equality, environmental protection and resource conservation. This creates better living conditions locally and opens up new educational opportunities.

The winner will be announced at a later date.
